Button Tethers
These button tethers are easy to use and well-tolerated by animals. All of the variations of this type of tether are based on the same design: the cannula passes through the stalk of a button which has been surgically attached to the animal (usually under the skin), into a length of spring which protects the cannula and transmits torque to the swivel, and up to a swivel mounted outside the cage.

• Small size which is ideal for mice
• Reduced animal stress for better research results
• Quick and easy tether attachment and removal

These button tethers are easy to use and well-tolerated by animals. All of the variations of this type of tether are based on the same design: the cannula passes through the stalk of a button which has been surgically attached to the animal (usually under the skin), into a length of spring which protects the cannula and transmits torque to the swivel, and up to a swivel mounted outside the cage.
Both of our standard button types have a low profile stalk that reduces stress on the sutures as the animal moves about. Simply twist the spring into the button stalk to attach it; the expansion force of the spring will hold it in place. You do not need extra tools, and the tether is free of obstructions for the cannula. Each tether also includes a quick disconnect coupler which sits about one inch above the animal. It lets you detach and reattach the tether easily, which further minimizes stress on the animal.
Polysulfone Button Tethers
These autoclavable buttons are designed for short- to medium-term studies. The lightweight plastic will not cause adverse tissue reactions as stainless steel sometimes does.
Dacron Mesh Button Tethers
These single-use buttons are designed for long-term implantation. After one to two weeks the subcutaneous tissue will actually grow into the Dacron mesh, making the sutures irrelevant.
Special Tethers
In addition to these standard tethers, we offer a range of special tether products including durable stainless steel buttons, custom length tethers, and beryllium copper spring stock for NMR studies. Two additional tethers are listed below. For details, please call Harvard Apparatus.
