Hugo-Sachs Elecktronik | Harvard Apparatus provides premium physiology research system specializing in tissue baths and isolated organ systems including Langendorff and Working Heart, systems for Isolated Liver, Isolated Kidney, Cardiomyocyte and Hepatocyte isolation, and full respiratory physiology isolated perfused lung systems. With our wide range of offerings we are able to provide you with both the research equipment and our highly experience staff of scientists and engineers for creating a solution tailored for your application requirements.

Our Langendorff and Working Heart Isolated Heart systems have been specifically designed to 1) overcome the technical issues associated with more traditional glassware-lattice-based heart perfusion systems, 2) accommodate hearts of multiple species, 3) perfuse the heart under known physiologic conditions that can be easily adjusted, 4) measure a large variety of parameters for each isolated heart and 5) simplify the perfusion procedure. We are able to offer you a complete isolated Langendorff and/or working heart perfusion system including pumps, thermocirculator, transducers, electrodes, amplifiers and data acquisition hardware and software. The isolated heart systems can also be integrated with your existing equipment.

The IH-SR and IH-5 systems allow for initial integration or later upgrade with the Working Heart perfusion pathway, a more physiological assay of ventricular contractility where the left ventricle is now fully-ejecting and performing pressure-volume and acceleration work. The Bi-Ventricular Working Heart System for rat through rabbit heart is useful for the growing field of right heart and whole heart physiology, especially in regards to Pulmonary Artery Hypertension and Right Ventricular Hypertrophy.

Our Isolated Perfused Lung systems have designed in collaboration with experts in the field of pulmonary physiology and isolated lung perfusion, researchers can have confidence in an HSE isolated lung system that meets their needs right out of the box.

All HSE Isolated Lung Systems are supplied standard with the option of a simple switch between constant flow and constant pressure for maximum protocol and application flexibility. Constant pressure perfusion of the isolated lung permits higher perfusate flow rates since in this case vasoconstriction decreases the perfusate flow and hydrostatic edema is unlikely to occur. The isolated lung system uses patented technology to enable seamless switching between positive and negative pressure ventilation on most system models. Negative pressure ventilation is the natural method of breathing for the lung and allows a physiological pulmonary flow and decreased edema formation in comparison to positive pressure ventilation.

Our Tissue Bath/Organ Bath selections are ideal for early drug screening in pharmacology research, function testing of engineered tissues, as well as many other common applications. Conventional vertical tissue baths as well as special application horizontal baths and superfusion baths are available to meet all of your needs.

The muscle contractions of rings or strips produced in vertical tissue baths can be measured either as forces (isometrically) or as displacements (isotonically). The Graz Organ Bath is suitable for most researchers, with tissue vessels from 2-20ml and a rigid construction on which baths are mounted. The Schuler Tissue Bath is optimal when either extremely small forces are measured requiring an even more stable framework and/or a certain level of semi-automation is desired.
